To be trusted by clients, you must be known as someone who will give accurate information. Asking open-ended questions will help you learn what information clients want, and validating their feelings makes them feel supported and heard. Additionally, using unbiased language establishes an environment free of stigma around pregnancy decisions. When supporting clients experiencing unintended pregnancy, remember to A.C.T.:<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #009490;\"><strong><u>A<\/u><\/strong>doption<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Affirm the client for making a choice that they feel is best for them at this time.<\/li>\n<li>Use client-centered, affirming language (e.g., \u201cplanning an adoption\u201d NOT \u201cgiving up your baby for adoption\u201d and \u201cbirth mother\u201d and \u201cadoptive mother\u201d NOT \u201creal mother\u201d).<\/li>\n<li>Discuss the three types of adoption (open, closed, familial).<\/li>\n<li>Based upon the client\u2019s wishes, explore community resources (agencies that fit your client&#8217;s needs).<\/li>\n<li>Connect the client with legal help for reviewing documents and contracts (Legal Aid, Bar Association Pro Bono list).<\/li>\n<li>Invite the client to follow up as needed for support and resources. Request permission to follow up with them to ensure that they were able to access the services\/resources they need.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #009490;\"><strong><u>C<\/u><\/strong>ontinuing Pregnancy to Parent<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Affirm the client for making a choice that they feel is best for them at this time.<\/li>\n<li>Discuss birth options (natural childbirth, epidural, hospital birth, midwife).<\/li>\n<li>Advocate with a provider&#8217;s office to connect the client with a provider who meets the client\u2019s needs.<\/li>\n<li>Connect the client with financial resources (presumptive eligibility for Medicaid, WIC, SNAP).<\/li>\n<li>Connect the client with community support (new mothers groups, lactation support, trauma and healing support groups).<\/li>\n<li>Assess for mental health and substance use concerns and connect the client to treatment\/supportive services.<\/li>\n<li>Provide the client with information on postpartum depression and anxiety prevalence, and normalize how frequently these feelings occur.<\/li>\n<li>Invite the client to follow up as needed for support and resources. Request permission to follow up with them to ensure that they were able to access the services\/resources they needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #009490;\"><strong><u>T<\/u><\/strong>ermination<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Affirm the client for making a choice that they feel is best for them at this time.<\/li>\n<li>Mirror client language (if client says \u201cend the pregnancy\u201d vs. \u201cabortion\u201d, or \u201cfetus\u201d instead of \u201cbaby\u201d).<\/li>\n<li>If needed, refer the client for a pregnancy test at a health department or a community health center to determine approximation of weeks.<\/li>\n<li>If the client has questions about the procedure, offer to call an abortion clinic with them.<\/li>\n<li>Connect the client with financial resources.<\/li>\n<li>Provide the client with information on abortion prevalence and normalize how frequently abortion occurs.<\/li>\n<li>Invite the client to follow up as needed for support and resources.
