{"id":6226,"date":"2021-11-12T08:57:10","date_gmt":"2021-11-12T13:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.providecare.org\/?p=6226"},"modified":"2024-09-18T16:20:04","modified_gmt":"2024-09-18T16:20:04","slug":"client-experience-study-exploring-whether-clients-really-want-all-pregnancy-options","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.providecare.org\/blog\/client-experience-study-exploring-whether-clients-really-want-all-pregnancy-options\/","title":{"rendered":"Provide&#8217;s Client Experience Study: Exploring Whether Clients Really Want to be Offered All Pregnancy Options"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For years, providers have been telling us, \u201cMy clients don\u2019t want to talk about abortion,\u201d or \u201cI only offer that option when I can tell the client is <em>in despair<\/em> about her pregnancy.\u201d We understood from interviewing providers that they didn\u2019t want to offend their clients by bringing up options that would make their clients uncomfortable. But what did <em>clients <\/em>really want? Other than a few small qualitative studies, no one had really asked them. Entire policies had been made about what providers could or couldn\u2019t say to clients about their pregnancy options without anyone ever studying what actually made clients more satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, we conducted a research study at randomly selected, publicly-funded family planning clinics in the deep South. We selected half at random to train and left the other half untrained. Then the staff at both sets of clinics began offering clients the option to complete an anonymous survey on an iPad after they received pregnancy options counseling. We ended with over 300 completed surveys and 37 client interviews and to ensure a rigorous analysis, we asked a public health university faculty member with whom we had no prior relationship to analyze our data. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.providecare.org\/client-experience-study\/\">Client Experience Study<\/a> found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide\u2019s Abortion Referrals Training approximately <strong>tripled the rate at which providers discussed abortion with clients and doubled the rate of abortion referral.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Clients were <strong>significantly more satisfied with their care<\/strong> when abortion was included or when all options were discussed.<\/li>\n<li>Clients were <strong>80% more likely to rate their provider as \u201cexcellent\u201d<\/strong> on all measures when their provider had discussed all pregnancy options with them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These quantitative findings were validated and explained by what clients told us in interviews. Clients said that they felt more respected and viewed their providers as more professional when they offered all options in a neutral way and didn\u2019t assume or judge what the clients wanted. One client related, \u201c<em>I would prefer them to offer discussing it with me. If you\u2019re looking at abortion for instance, you\u2019re able to discuss it with somebody that doesn\u2019t make you feel judgment<\/em><em>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Even clients who planned to continue their pregnancies were more satisfied when they were offered all options. In interviews, nearly all clients who intended to parent indicated that they felt comfortable declining options they weren\u2019t interested in as long as the provider approached the options in a neutral way. Another client explained, \u201c<em>I told her, I\u2019m gonna keep it, but I think they did amazing. I really liked the way that she came at me with things. She explained each one\u2014like \u201cthese are your options and this is what you can do.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This month, a rigorous, peer-reviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.providecare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/2021_Patient-reported-experience-with-discussion-of-all-options-during-pregnancy-options-counseling-in-the-US-South.pdf\">article on our findings<\/a> \u2013 the first of their kind \u2013 will be published in the respected journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionjournal.org\/article\/S0010-7824(21)00368-1\/fulltext\"><em>Contraception<\/em><\/a>. We hope that our findings will give providers the confidence that <strong>naming all options for clients<\/strong> in a way that signals a willingness to discuss any or all of them <strong>without judgment<\/strong> will ultimately create a more positive experience for clients and ensure that their needs are met.
