This is why social workers play a critical\u00a0role in removing barriers to reproductive and sexual healthcare for all.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-9083 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.providecare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/social-work-history-blog-sidebar.png\" alt=\"social work history blog sidebar\" width=\"400\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.providecare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/social-work-history-blog-sidebar.png 400w, https:\/\/www.providecare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/social-work-history-blog-sidebar-100x300.png 100w, https:\/\/www.providecare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/social-work-history-blog-sidebar-341x1024.png 341w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialworkers.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Association of Social Workers<\/a> (NASW), \u201cevery individual, within the context of their value system, must have access to family planning, abortion, and other reproductive health services\u201d (NASW, 2015, p. 117). Additionally, the NASW <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialworkers.org\/About\/Ethics\/Code-of-Ethics\/Code-of-Ethics-English\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Code of Ethics<\/a> includes foundation practice values of <strong>social justice<\/strong> and <strong>dignity and worth of a person<\/strong>, both of which strongly support the rights of individuals to access education and services connected to sexual and reproductive health, as does the social work ethical principle of client <strong>self-determination<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Self-determination means that people can make their own decisions about sexuality and reproduction without government interference. It requires working toward safe, legal, and accessible reproductive health care services, including abortion services, for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Pregnant people should be free to decide for themselves, without duress and according to their personal beliefs and convictions, whether they want to become parents, when to have children, and to have the right to parent children in safe and healthy environments.<\/p>\n<p>Because social workers are knowledgeable about family and community resources, we have many opportunities to support the communities we serve. We may be the first point of contact for people facing an unintended pregnancy. We should take pride in our professional responsibility to help clients obtain the information and care they need for effective family planning and safeguarding their reproductive health.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #612744;\">5 Ways Social Workers Can Support Clients Seeking Abortion<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #f36845;\"><strong>1. Share tools and resources.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reprolegalhelpline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">If\/When\/How\u2019s Repro Legal Helpline<\/a> provides information about self-managed abortion and abortion access for young people.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ineedana.com\/advanced-search\/support\">INeedAnA.com<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortionfinder.org\/\">AbortionFinder.org<\/a> provide information about local abortion providers, state laws and policies, and financial assistance.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/abortionfunds.org\/funds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National and local abortion funds<\/a> are the experts in overcoming obstacles people face when getting their abortions.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/socialwork.buffalo.edu\/content\/dam\/socialwork\/home\/infographics\/Trauma-informed-abortion-seekers-diagram.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A trauma informed framework for working with abortion seekers<\/a> created by Dr. Gretchen Ely, professor at the University at Buffalo\u2019s School of Social Work.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialworkers.org\/assets\/secured\/documents\/da\/da2008\/referred\/FamilyPlanning.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASW Policy Statement of Family Planning and Reproductive Choice<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Check out our page of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.providecare.org\/abortion-resources-for-providers\/\">Abortion Resources for Providers<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #f36845;\"><strong>2.
